Success has not changed what drives Cambri Casey. The Mannford senior third baseman still looks to the difficult moments as fuel, using every setback as a reason to return to the field more focused and determined than before.
“My failures motivate me to be better,” Casey said.
That mindset has helped shape Casey’s softball career. She has narrowed her athletic focus to the sport she loves, stepping away from basketball and track in order to devote more time and energy to improving on the diamond.
“It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to be successful in my sport,” Casey said.
Casey’s dedication has produced memorable moments, including what she considers the highlight of her career: winning the Little League World Series in 2021. The experience gave her a milestone to remember while also reinforcing the standard she wants to maintain as a high school athlete.
At third base, Casey values the competitive environment around her. She especially enjoys the importance and intensity of district competition.
“I enjoy beating everyone in our district because those games are important,” Casey said.
That competitive edge also shows up during Mannford’s practices. Casey said each teammate contributes to an atmosphere where players push one another to improve and compete for opportunities.
“I enjoy working with everyone on my team because we are all competing for a spot,” Casey said.
She also appreciates the contributions of teammate Bella Gilbert, whom Casey believes opponents sometimes underestimate.
“I think the least appreciated person on my team is Bella Gilbert. Teams will put me on base so that she has to hit instead of me, but they don’t realize that she is just as good as me or maybe even better,” Casey said.
Away from the field, Casey manages the demands of being a student-athlete by completing schoolwork after long days of competition.
“To balance my school work and sports I have to stay up at night and do homework after my games,” Casey said.
Casey credits Mrs. Spradlin as a meaningful influence in her life because of the connection she builds with students. She also looks to Jordy Frahm (Bahl) as a role model.
“My biggest role model is Jordy Frahm(Bahl). She shows younger athletes that you do not have to be big to be successful,” Casey said.
For Casey, representing Mannford carries personal meaning. “I love representing my school in softball,” she said. “We have come a long way and I think the town is starting to realize that.”
